In this past legislative session, the Legislature extended the length of the provisional status for individuals in a teaching or other nonsupervisory certificated position from two years to three years.

After reviewing the legislation, OSPI has concluded that:

    • The three-year provisional requirement DOES NOT apply to teachers who will be completing their second year of provisional status.
    • The three-year provisional requirement DOES apply to teachers who are in their first year of provisional status this year.
    • It WILL apply to teachers who are placed on provisional status for the first time next shcool year (2010-11 school year).
The law did not change the current provision for teachers who have completed two years of provisional teaching in a district and transfer to another district. Their provisional status in the new district continues to be one-year.
